In 1975, the National Water Research Center (NWRC) was established as a research entity within the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. Since then, the Center has been
excelling the efforts towards fulfilling the research needed in the water sector.
Throughout the years, Egypt has faced great challenges imposed by the growing demand
for water for newly reclaimed lands and industrial expansion. Water pollution is another challenge which threatens our environment and limits our water resources. One of the main causes of these challenges is, no doubt, the incessant growth of population.
The Center has evolved as a research facility which combines field expertise with research capability. Today, twelve Research Institutes, a Central Laboratory for Environmental Quality Monitoring and a Strategic Research unit are forming the main body of the Center. Besides, the Center has its own Information System, an elite scientific Library and state- of-the-art facility.
Over the years, the Center has provided the water sector of Egypt with the necessary research, applied methodologies and proposed policies, which enabled Egypt to furnish its ambitious water
plan till the year 2017. The great contribution to the South Valley and North Sinai DevelopmentProjects is a milestone in the history of the Center that is going to be remembered for years to come.
We look forward to a very productive future for the National Water Research Center, as its programs contribute to the advance of knowledge about water resources, irrigation and drainage in Egypt.
