The Strategic Research Unit (SRU)


The Strategic Research Unit (SRU) was established in 1993 as an entity within the National Water Research Center (NWRC) organizational chart. SRU emerged from the coalition of the Nile Water Strategic Research Unit (NWSRU) funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Water Resources Strategic Research Activities (WRSRA) supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). to be the First that Develops an Plan to Investigate the Various Alterative for the Implementation of the IWRM Concept .
The Unique Ness about it is that it Presents a new Integrative Approach to Water Policy Development and a Radical Contrast to the Traditional Roles if Research Units.

Ultimate goal
the Ultimate goal here is ot Make Water Available for the Different Water Sectors and National Development Projects.

Mandate
To Support Decision Makers in Decision Makers in Drawing Sustainable Water Resources Strategies Including Environmental, Socio-economic, Food Security, and Gender Aspects for the Efficient Management of Water Resources.

To synthesize and analyze knowledge generated by MWRI, NWRC and its institutes for planning purposes and to conduct multi disciplinary studies about the potential problems such as:
- Integrated water resources planning.
- Multi-sectoral water management.
- Marginal water resources including desalination.
- Water and food security.
- Water quality management.

Achievements :
Over the years SRU has acted as a Decision support system on strategic issues national management level It has been successful in developing strategies and policies through learning from post experiences in the field.
The Unit has developed high skills in developing database and GIS systems regarding the various water related issues. It has been involved in projects in the area of decision support systems for water resources planning, strategic plans for food security, assessment of water user associations, water quality management for Meshreq and Maghreb countries, and water conflicts resolutions towards water and stability and optional use of water resources in agriculture
